• Abed Hammoud, a Wayne County assistant prosecutor and Muslim, ran for mayor of Dearborn, Mich., last year and lost. He continues to participate in politics. Contact 313-846-7440, ahammoud@comcast.net.

• Eric Erfan Vickers is the executive director of the American Muslim Council and a former candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives from St. Louis. Contact 202-789-2262.
• Illinois' United Muslim American Association has conducted a wide array of political organizing activities and endorses candidates. The group initiated the process that resulted in the Halal Food Act of Illinois, signed into law Aug 16, 2001, which is being copied by Muslim groups in other states, most notably California.
